Move Over Avatars -- Tween Designers are Creating Their Own Outfits Online

Daniel Island, SC (PRWEB) September 23, 2008

Design-Girls.com is a brand new website which allows girls to design, personalize, and purchase their own outfits (sizes 6-14). Through a step by step process, users choose a style (tops, bottoms or accessories), color and trim. The trim includes everything from faux gems, ribbons and sequins to pom-pom fringe. Before purchasing the outfit, customers get to see it online and have the option to email their creation to friends and family or add items to a wish list.

Design-Girls.com became a reality after the founder, Tanya Murphy of Daniel Island, SC, watched her six year old daughter dressing virtual Barbies and avatars online. Murphy already knew her daughter's passion for fashion and real life dress up, and wondered how she could take this world of online fashion play a step further and create a more real-life experience for young girls. "I know how much pride my daughter takes in anything she creates, and I wanted her to be able to channel that creative energy. Now she and others can easily design an outfit that is unique and personal," Murphy said.

Girls ages 8 to 12 who make up the core target audience, collectively have a purchasing power estimated at $ 20 billion annually. This is a highly tech savvy generation of girls and it shows. According to an August 2008 report by the online audience research company, Nielsen Online, 14.8 million girls are online an average of twelve times per month. Sites like Stardoll, Girlsense, and Gaia Online are gaining millions of unique visitors per month. So too, are giants like Disney, Mattel and MGA Entertainment who are vying for their attention online with sites like Disney.go.com, Everythinggirl.com (Barbie, Polly Pocket) and Bratz.com.

Design-Girls.com was founded in 2008 by mother of three, and former Fast Company Magazine sales executive, Tanya Murphy. The site offers self-designed clothing and accessories for girls in sizes 6 -14.
