Four-year-old Karen Peterson uses her imagination to create a world of her own after losing her young mother and being raised by her wonderful retired military father. She soon faces some challenges: moving to a home for girls when she enters fifth grade and becoming temporarily paralyzed from the waist down. This new novel follows Karen?s journey from her ailing father?s bedside, revelations about her mother and finally realizing later in life that everything she dreamed of has come true.
Catching Up tells the story of the fateful night when Karen?s mom disappears, going away to design clothes for the circus, a tale Will Peterson tells his daughter. She suffers further loss when her beloved grandmother dies in a fire that also destroys her favorite stuffed animal, Mr. Bear. She does well at school, and soon she and her childhood best friend, Donald, get engaged. Her life takes unexpected turns with a divorce, unconventional marriage and the start of a burgeoning writing career. Eventually her writing brings Karen full circle and the happiness she deserves.
Author R. Pepe was inspired to write this book while window shopping in a quaint Oregon town. While leaving the last shop, she saw a little bear sitting in a chair. The sight inspired the book, which is based on the theory that ?you live what you see.?
